B R I E F  0 U T L I N E -- D A N I E L  11

                The tenth chapter of Daniel provides the setting for Daniel 11 -- the longest

                 continuous prophecy in all the Bible.

           V.   1-- The prophecy is given in the approximate year of 538 B.C.        

           V.   2-- The four Persian Kings:  Cambyses (7 1/2 yrs.) (529-522), Pseudo Smerdis

                        (7 mo.) (522-521 -- the Artaxerxes of Ezra), Darius I (36 yrs.) (520-485),

                        and Xerxes (485-465) who was far richer than all of the others--he

                        attacked Greece.        

                      * Gap of 123 years        

           V.   3-- Alexander the Great (Grecia) defeated the Persians at the battles of

                        Issus (333) and Arbella (331).        

           V.   4-- Alexander's empire divided to the four generals (plus other unimportant

                        divisions):  Ptolemy (Soter, son of Lagus) took Egypt (including

                        Palestine); Antipater (his son, Cassander) took Macedonia and Greece;

                        Laomedon took Syria; Seleucus Nicator took Babylon; (Lysimachus --

                        Asia Minor, second possessor).        

            V. 5 -- King of South is Ptolemy I-Sorter; his prince (general), Seleucus

                        Nicator who finally seizes Syria in 312 B.C. and made himself king.

           V.   6-- Marriage between Antiochus II (Theos) of Syria, King of the North, and

                        Bernice, the daughter of Ptolemy Philadelphus, the King of the South

                        (Egypt) in 260 B.C.  Antiochus' first wife (Lodice) takes vengeance by

                        having Bernice slain (252 B.C.), the Egyptians who attended her killed,

                        her son murdered (not the father of Bernice as ituplied in KJ mis-

                        translation) and Antiochus poisoned (Theos 245 B.C.) and secured

                        throne for her son Seleucus II 246 B.C.        

            V. 7 -- Ptolemy (Euregetes) III, brother of Bernice, son of Philadelphus,      

                        conquers Syria (245 B.C.).        

                     * In the reign of Ptolemy III (Euregetes) (verse 7), B.C. 247-222.

                        Egypt annexed part of Ethiopia -- the two became one land.  Ethiopia

                        independent since 168 B.C.        

           V.   8-- Ptolemy (Euregetes) III-- King of South carries 2,500 idols into Egypt

                        as spoil (527 B.C.).  Ptolemy, King of South, outlives his rival,

                        Seleucus Il-Callinicus, and peace exists for a time.        

           V.   9-- This is a summary verse.  King of the South (Ptolemy Euregetes) attacked

                        Syria (verses 7 and 8) and because of sedition in Egypt returns home.                 

           V. 10-- Of two sons of Seleucus II (Callinicus III, King of the North), ONE --

                       Antiochus III--the Great (B.C. 223-187) -- King of South invaded Syria)

                       Palestine and concludes treaty  Antiochus the Great renews war in

                       217 B.C. takes Palestine) and attacks Raphia, near Gaza, a fortress on

                       the border of Egypt.        

           V.11-- Ptolemy IV~Philopater (son of Euregetes, King of Egypt) defeats the

                       King of the North, Antiochus the Great, at Raphia.        

           V.12-- Egyptians annex Palestine to Egypt, but make rash treaty with Syria

                       which dissipates victory.  Philopater, King of South, persecutes

                       thousands of Jews in the city of Alexandria because he was struck with

                       paralysis when trying to enter the Temple at Jerusalem.

          V.13-- King of North -- Antiochus III (Antiochus the Great) -- after 12 years

                      assembles great army to conquer Egypt which has a weak king -- Philopater

                      being dead (205 B.C.) --Ptolemy Epiphanes (his infant son) on throne.        

          V.14-- Syrians (Antiochus) North make treaty with Philip of Macedon against

                      Egypt (Ptolemy) South.  Wealthy Jews who fled to Egypt to build a

                      temple there rebel against Egypt (King of South) and ~oin Antiochus

                      when Syria commences invasion.  Jews suffer.  Vision is found in

                      Isaiah 19:18-25.        

          V.15 -- King of North, Antiochus 111- the Great, momentarily occupied by the

                       attack from Pergamum, again attacks Egypt in 198 and defeats Egyptian

                      ally Scopas at Paneas and retakes Palestine. (Battle of Mt. Panium

                      B.C. 198)        

          V.16 --All of Palestine in power of Syrians under Antiochus the Great.        

          V.17-- Antiochus, King of North, plans to conquer Egypt by trickery.  His

                     daughter Cleopatra given in marriage to Ptolemy Epiphanes, King of

                     South (198 B.C.).  This "deal" had appearance of uprightness or

                     equal conditions, but it failed.  Cleopatra aids husband, King of

                     South, against her father, King of North.

         V.18-- Antiochus, King of North, invades Asia Minor and takes Aegean Islands.

                     The Roman general,Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiaticus (190) causes

                     Syrian reproach to Rome to return on his own head -- Antiochus over-

                     whelmingly defeated at battle of Magnesia, B.C  190.        

         V.19-- Antiochus, King of North, after returning to Antioch -- a fort -- is

                     murdered at Elymais by people for plundering temple to pay Roman

                     indemnity.  Circumstances of death are controversial (B.C. 187).

         V. 20-- Heliodorus sent by Seleucus IV (Philopater, son of Antiochus the

                      Great) as tax collector thru Palestine (187-176 B.C.).  King Seleucus

                      Philopater is poisoned by Heliodorus.  KJ has a mistranslation -- there

                      shall arise one who shall send a tax collector  (within a few days after

                      tax collector went out).        

         V. 21-- Vile person: Antiochus Epiphanes IV, younger brother of Seleucus, son

                      of Antiochus the Great drives out Heliodorus -- takes throne.      

         V. 22-- Collects armies who quell foes.  Onias (prince of covenant), high

                      priest, replaced by Jason.        

         V. 23-- Antiochus Epiphanes deals deceitfully with Rome and with the high priest.

                      Jason now replaced with Menelaus. *(This Antiochus is a type of the

                      final "beast" dictator in Europe.)        

         V. 24-- Antiochus distributes wealth to anybody and everybody; issues threats;

                      uses propaganda.        

         V. 25-- Antiochus Epiphanes reduces Egypt in four campaigns beginning in 173.

                      Forcast devices:  a bribery and propaganda.

         V. 26-- Ptolemy Philometor of Egypt, King of South, nephew of Antiochus, King

                      of the North, is betrayed to the Syrians and made a prisoner in guise

                      of friendship because conqueror and prisoner are uncle and nephew

                      (174 B.C.). Egyptians in Alexandria make Ptolemy's brother (Euregetes

                       or Physcon) king.        

         V. 27-- Uncle (Antiochus) and nephew (Ptolemy) at banquet table each try to

                      deceive the other (174 B.C.).        

         V. 28-- Antiochus returns and persecutes the Jews who rejoiced upon hearing

                      the false report that Antiochus died (168 B.C.). 

         V. 29-- King of North returns to Egypt when (Ptolemy) brothers learn of uncle's

                      (Antiochus) treachery (168 B.C.).  Romans demand withdrawal.  Rome makes

                      Egypt a protectorate.        

         V.30 -- Ships of Kittim from Cyprus:  Roman fleet came against Antiochus.

                      Renegade Jews join with Gentile Syrians to destroy what remained of

                      true religion in Palestine.        

         V. 31-- Climax of horror (168 B.C.).  See Daniel 8:11-14 (abolished the daily

                      sacrifice).  *Idol of Jupiter Olympus set up (Chisel 15).  This is the

                      abomination that makes desolate.  (To be repeated in coming tribulation.)    

This Understanding of the Abomination of Desolation was latter disposed of and the

          V.32-- Many Jews reject covenant of God.  Maccabean revolt.

                                    * Changes over here to time of end.--beginning of instruction

          V. 33 -- to V. 35.  The Church of God to time of end.  Jews do not know God,

                        nor does persecution make them righteous.  (See Rev. 12:6,11,13,17.)        

           V. 36-- The king is ruler of the North.  It is not Syria because Rome occupied

                        Syria (65 B.C.).  *Rome is King of the North. Verse describes Roman

                        emperors and successive revivals to our day.'  Emperors exalt themselves.

                        Two thousand years of Roman control and government.        

           V. 37 -- Proper translation:  Neither shall he regard gods of his fathers

                        (Romans never knew true God).  (Don't worship pagan gods but make

                        themselves god)  Desire of women is Tames (Ezek. 8:14), who was false

                        Christ.  Emperors rejected authority of false Christ.        

                      * Jupiter (Roman) is Zeus (Greek), ruler of heaven, the most important

                        of the 12 great Olympians, gods of the Greeks and Romans.  Actually

                        "the Savior" false messiah Nimrod -- Satan.        

           V. 38-- Proper translation is "god of fortresses " (munitions). Pagans had

                        no god of fortresses, only a goddess.  She was Summaries, a type of

                        fallen church.  Therefore male head of fallen church is god of

                        fortresses.  He claims to be God.  See II Thess. 2:3-10.  The Pope

                        is the god whom his father's knew not.        

           V. 39-- KJ is obscure.  It means that with help of popes, the emperors gained

                        victories.  Those who acknowledge him, he increased with honor.

                        Feudalistic system.        

           V. 40-- King of South:   Ethiopia.  Egypt swallowed up by Rome 31 B.C.  King

                        Manlike defeats Italians in 1896.  Mussolini (40 yrs. later), King of

                        North, defeats Ethiopia (1934), King of South.        

           V. 41--v. 45 NOT YET FULFILLED.  Palestine conquered (Zech.14:2), Transjordan

                        and Turkey escapes.  Russian threat, Europe attacks first.  Vatican

                        moved to Zion. Egypt, Ethiopia and Libya captured.  Russia wants

                        Palestine and attacks.
