II THESSALONIANS
Background:Written
shortly after the first epistle in late 50 A. D., or
early
51 A.D., or possibly the middle of 51 A.D.
Written from Corinth the same
as
the first epistle.
CHAPTER 1.
V. 5 - Judgment -- I Pet. 4:12,l7;
James 1:2. This was not penance, but
outside
persecution! It was not self-afflicted.' Matt. 5:10, Phil. 1:28.
8 - Dan. 7:10. Christ coming in flame of fire. Ex. 3:14.
The flaming fire
here
alludes to Christ1s coming, not the punishment on man. Jude 7 SHOWS
Sodom and Gomorrah suffered eternal fire -- they were an example.
9 - During the Millennium as
well as Christ' s coming. Aionion
destruction, age-
lasting
or Messianic period. This denotes
during the millennium. Zech. 14:12.
These wicked will not
live during the millennium. Christ is
coning with fire
(Dan. 7:10). He will be able to use it as He sees
fit. These wicked are
destroyed
only during the millennium. This is
what this verse implies.
Mal. 4:1,
seems to be referring more to gehenna. The time sequence in this
verse 9 appears to be at
the second coming -- not all will be destroyed then --
and
this refers to the first death for these people. The Day of the Lord
carries through from Christ's
intervention in world affairs to the end of the
100 year period
following the millennium (II Pet. 3:10).
10 - Shows when -- at Christ's
coming hence it means those who are going to fight
against
Christ - not the whole world.
Glorified by His saints all during
the
millennium. Critical says "shall
have come.
12 - Is Christ1s name being
glorified in us, we need to realize the great respon-
sibility of being a Christian. We should all be saints.'
CHAPTER 2.
V. 2 - Evidently false ministers
were even counterfeiting Paul's writings.
Spirit
here
could mean demons. False epistles were
being disseminated.
3 - One man, one individual
not all the wicked people.
4 - He will arise out of the
Church.
5 - Shows once again His verbal
authority.
6 - He here may or can mean
the influence from this evil power.
7 - This verse may imply Paul
did not have complete knowledge on Christ's second
coming! Only Matt. and the first epistle to the
Thessalonians had been
written
at this time. Daniel was not open to
the apostle Paul. Second,
he
here does not refer to the apostle Paul -- it should be translated "it."
It refers to the
mystery. l096--Strongs--taken
out of the way -- should be
translated
"arises out of the midst." This is referring to the mystery of
iniquity
arising out of the midst. John
2:18. Those who be taken out of
the
way were the false ministers arising up in the midst. Ginsmoi
(Greek 1096)
"arising
out of the midst." It was God's Spirit that kept this arising down
(through
his minister--the one (Paul) who is doing the restraining here.)
Refers to those at
Paul's time coming out of God's true Church.
First he
refers
to Paul -- second he refers to the mystery.
8 - Dan. 7:9-10, Rev. 19:20, 20:10. Refers to the Pope in the latter days -- the
culmination
of the arising out of in verse 7. The
type of the final man is
the
mystery of lawlessness. Spirit of His
mouth is Christ's power. Then
shows
it is in our day.
9 - Matt. 24:24. Satan the devil is working, and hard. At this time lying
literal
wonders. Read Ex. 8, 9, 10, 11, how
these sorcerers had power from
Satan.
10 - Isa. 66:2, Ps. 119:151, II Tim. 3:7. They were
blinded by this false
system. The world does not love God's word -- John
17:17.
11 - Religious systems of this
world -- Hosea 4:6, Jer. 7:28.
12 - Judged not damned -- this
is the 100-year period after the millennium.
13 - Not by height, weight,
looks or name, but a certain number who are to fill
his
Church. Of the Spirit -- by means of the
Spirit.
14 - The Gospel was the means
by which these people were called.
This gives you
the
opportunity for salvation. This does
not insure you of salvation. You
must
be willing to act upon it. We are not in most cases phenomenally called,
but
rather by natural means.
CHAPTER 3.
V.
1 - Eph. 6:18-20, Col. 4:l2. Request, as well as command, that the
work will
be accomp1ished.
2 - The faith -- the understanding or
truth.
3 - James 4:7.
4 - Raving no confidence in men -- Ps.
l46:4.
5 - Rom. 5:5, I John 5:3.
6 - Problem in Church now brought
up. During his stay here, he could
discern
their
problems and faults.
7 - Disorderly-- not coveting their
tithes.
9 - Power--authority; follow--imitate.
10 - Prov.
6:6-10, Matt. 7:7. Even spiritual food
comes by work. Prov.
28:19.
This equally applies to
labor for food.
11 - I Tim. 5:8-13.
13 - James 1:22.
14 - Rom. 16:17, Gal. 6:1, Matt. 18:15.
15 - If you have any feeling of revenge
or retaliation don't go because you are
not
spiritual. Matt. 18:15. You take it to
the Church (I Cor. 6:3). Those
who
do the discerning and judging are those set in authority.
16 - Isa.
9:6. Christ the prince, the Lord of
Peace. Peace is a gift of God.
Peace of mind, joy,
happiness, salvation. Christ is the
only way to find
peace.
17 - This shows Paul wrote
other epistles at this same time. I
write -- style
of
his writing, or his own handwriting.
1.
Paul wrote the second epistle shortly after the first to correct a
wrong impression
the
Thessalonians had received as a result of the first epistle. They misconstrued
the second coming of Christ to
be immediately, consequently had become loafers and
busybodies.
Paul wrote to admonish them in this incorrect concept, commanding
them
to work and not loaf.
2.
The second epistle appears to have been written during the early
portion of 51 A.D.,
from Corinth also, as Paul's stay there was a year and six
months. It may have
been
written as late as June of 51 A.D.
3.
II Thes. 1:7-10. It is a right doing for God to repay
evil for evil! Vengeance
belongs
to God.' Rave peace of mind, then, or rest, for Jesus will be revealed
from heaven with angels in
flaming fire (this shows His method of coming -- not
His means of rendering
vengeance). Dan..
7:10. Who shall suffer aionion of
"age-lasting" vengeance,
separated from the Lord's face. During the Messianic
reign or Millennium these dead
will lie in their graves, hence separated from
Jesus -- but this age-lasting
destruction is not forever and ever, but only until
God sees fit to resurrect them at the
end of the Millennium. They formerly had
been blinded and deceived and God will
not hold anyone accountable as long as
they
are in ignorance. Their physical death
as a result of rebellion against
Christ at His coming, for the
larger portion of them will have been done in
ignorance.
II Thes. 2:5-8.
Paul shows in these verses that the mystery of iniquty
(lawless-
ness)
was already at work in the Church. But
there was one restraining or holding
it
back, namely Paul, who was the one restraining influence. The Panin version
shows that this spirit or
deceptive attitude would be held dawn until of its own
accord or due to the removal
of Paul it would "arise out of the midst'1 of the
congregation
and actually formulate pre-Catholic apostacy.' John wrote in (I John
2:18-19) about 90 A.D. that these who were of the mystery
"went out from us
because
they were not of us." Verse 8 here in II Thessalonians moves right up
to our time showing the
culmination of this whole rotten mess -- the one lawless
one who will be slain by Jesus
Christ at His second coming, the singular physical
antitype, the one picture of
the whole mystery of lawlessness in total rebellion
against
the law of God!
