Sermon: Hope for the Hopeless

By M. John Allen

I was already to begin another installment in the Bible Prophecy series, which is very important and on my mind quite a bit lately, when something else intruded yesterday.

For years, it seems that my life has been a series of trials. As I have come to discover, though, I have no one to blame but myself for a lot of these problems. I think if you will honestly assess your own situation, you will discover the same thing in your life. For years, Mr. Armstrong has said that “the hardest thing for a man to admit is that HE IS WRONG!” and therein lies the root of so much of our problems.

Well, yesterday was a watershed event for me. I’m not going to go into too many details right now because that is not the main thrust of this message. But yesterday, I had one of those self inflicted problems that we occasionally get intone, because of breaking of one or more physical laws. It is so easy to make the excuse that “well, that’s just a physical sin, so it’s not really important. It’s the spiritual sins that are important.”

Well, brethren, I am here to tell you that if your suffering physically gets bad enough that you have to cry out to God to preserve your very LIFE because it is in jeopardy, then you won’t say that anymore. And God made me eat crow, and admit that these two problems were indeed a SIN, and I had to repent of those sins.

How do we know that something we do in the physical realm is a sin, especially if that sin is not even mentioned in the Bible? Well, we can tell something is a sin by its FRUITS! God doesn’t want to deny us anything that is good for us. But, if we do something that is not good for us, then when it becomes SIN, we will no it because the fruits of sin will begin to manifest themselves. The fruits of sin cause suffering and ultimately death. In the case of a physical sin it can result, ultimately, in our physical death. So, as the Apostle Paul said, “the wages of sin is death.” So when I analyzed these things, I could tell yesterday that they were sins because they could very easily result in my physical DEATH if not repented of. God literally FORCED IT DOWN MY THROAT AND GOT ME TO ADMIT AFTER YEARS AND YEARS THAT I WAS SINNING!

Many of us like to make excuses. Instead of calling something alcoholism, we will just say that “I have too much to drink too often, but hey, I can handle it.” Another person, such as myself who likes to eat too much, will simply say that they “tend to overdo it a little when I eat.”

Well, one of the sins I had to admit was the sin of gluttony. I have had a battle with this for years. Sometimes I win and really take the weight off for several years at a time, and then I let down, and on come the pounds again. It’s like a Satanic seesaw! Over the years my weight goes up and then it goes down, on and on. But now, I realize that I have to do something PERMANENT ABOUT IT! It doesn’t matter if “there are a lot of people fatter than me,” or whatever other excuse I make for myself -- I have come to realize deep down that fundamentally over eating and eating the wrong kinds of foods is WRONG, and if I don’t stop it, I COULD DIE FROM IT!

We all have our own battles to fight. I have just shared one of mine with you. We each have our own problems and stories to tell because we are all different.

It is natural in the face of ADDICTION [yes, overeating can be an ADDICTION, just as indulging in extra marital sex, drugs, alcohol, shopping too much, gambling too much, or whatever other thing you care to name; even things that are normally good can turn into a deadly ADDICTION if we aren’t too careful!] to first deny it. We don’t have a problems, we think it’s just in the way you look at it. Finally, when the fruits of our problem start coming home to roost, some of us still live in denial, thinking that maybe “it’s someone else’s fault.” We are not responsible, psychologists purr, it was our parent’s fault, our husband’s fault, our children’s fault -- on and on the blame game goes, with some even BLAMING GOD! But there is really NO EXCUSE except our own human weaknesses and the temptation of Satan that plays on them. But despite Satan’s role in all of this, GOD STILL HOLDS US RESPONSIBLE.!

So what do we do? Do we go into a fit of depression? Do we eat more because that’s what makes us feel better, when the truth is revealed. Do we drink more? Do we take more drugs? Do we go on a sexual rampage? Do we hit the gambling casino? Do we commit suicide? How do we cope when God reveals to us the TERRIBLE TRUTH about ourselves?

Let me say right now that this sermon is not one of those “Pharisee guilt trip excursions” we have all heard in the past that make us feel inferior to the “spiritually enlightened.” What today’s message is a MESSAGE OF HOPE FOR ALL HUMANITY! It is meant to show you HOW TO FIX WHAT IS WRONG IN YOUR LIFE, SO THAT YOU CAN ATTAIN TO THE POTENTIAL YOU WERE MEANT TO HAVE! That is my purpose today, and God’s purpose. This will, I hope, be an UPLIFTING MESSAGE to make you REJOICE, and not a downer.

Who are the players in this drama we call life? Well, when you really get down to it, there are only THREE major players in our lives. We are of course the main character in our own little drama. ON one side is God, and on the other side is Satan. God wants what is best for us, and has given us His instructions for our life. If we follow it, it leads to happiness and joy filled to the brim. Sometimes His way may seem unpleasant, but when we get to the truth of the matter, we see that He always has our best interests at heart.

ON the other side is Satan. He dangles carrots in front of our noses. He tempts us to do what feels good for the moment, but it may have long range consequences we can’t see without God’s help. His way looks exciting. It looks glittering. It has a big sign that says WELCOME on it. And the first steps on this road are indeed nice. But, as we continue down he path, things start to go wrong, and then they get worse, and then tragedy strikes, and for most people without God in their lives it is then too late. Another life has been ruined, and Satan moves on to his next victim.

But, we can’t really blame it all on Satan. We, too, have our own parts to play in this. Satan can’t get anywhere without our willing cooperation, because he has no power to FORCE us to go down his path. the feet are ours, and the walk is our walk, even though the path is his. We don’t have to walk this way, but we can be tricked into it.

Conversion is a process. When we are first called by God, we hear the joyous good news that we are born to become members of the soon coming, world ruling, KINGDOM OF GOD! We discover the wonderful TRUTH of our human potential, that we are destined to become GOD AS GOD IS GOD! We discover all of this wonderful NEW INFORMATION, which the world is not privileged to understand because God is not calling most of them today. We find out about our wonderful calling, and everything seems rosy and right.

But then, we learn that there is something WE HAVE TO DO, which is to REPENT OF OUR SINS and be baptized, so that we can receive the earnest of God’s Holy Spirit that starts us on he path to our human potential. But we discover that REPENTANCE is the coming to the knowledge that what we are doing -- in face that WE -- is wrong, and that to repent means to recognize this wrong way, to turn from it, and then to MOVE IN A POSITIVE DIRECTION AWAY FROM IT!

So initially, God reveals to us a lot about what is wrong with us. We repent, and set our foot on the road to salvation and eternal life. But then, sometime after we start this journey, we discover the terrible truth that what we repented of at the outset was not all the sin there is in our life! We start to discover more and more sins in our lives as God reveals them to our mind and we get further along His road. And this process goes on throughout our whole lives. The longer we stay on this road, the more deeply rooted sins become apparent. We even uncover sins that we didn’t realize were sins. some of the repentance causes us much grief. Sometimes God has to just confront us with our sins and force us to admit it through circumstances. It’s an ongoing process.

But what is the REASON for all of this? Is God a sadist or something? Not at all! If you haven’t read the book The Incredible Human Potential, in our library section, then I suggest you start reading it today. It explains this whole process better than I can in one short message. I can only hit the high points today, but that book covers this experience we call the Christian Life in depth.

As stated in the above mentioned book, after Satan rebelled and dragged down a third of the angels with him, it left God with a problem. Satan had been the highest form of CREATED BEING that it was possible for even God to make through fiat. But when Satan and the angels were created, they, like a human baby, HAD NO CHARACTER! They were a blank slate that only life experience could write on. Satan and on third of the angels rejected God’s way of GIVE, and decided that the way of GET was better. That is what made more sense to them. And so we have the foundation of the present world’s problems. Now, there was a problem. Satan and his angels had been created as spirit beings, which meant that once created, even God could not “uncreate” them. They had eternal life just like God, because they were composed of SPIRIT, which doesn’t change. Naturally, God was a higher class of beings from the angels. We cannot understand how all of this works in reality, brethren, from our limited human perspective. All we can know is what it says in the Bible that angels are of a class of being LOWER than God, and presently HIGHER than humanity, but that humanity will someday reach he higher God class. All of this is also discussed in this book, so I won’t belabor it here because I have a point to make. I encourage everyone to avail themselves of this book in our library, which proves all of this from the BIBLE.

So God realized that there was a problem. He is love, and doesn’t want His creations to suffer, but here was a whole big GROUP of beings who had decided to live the wrong way of life. And once their character was set -- once the writing was on the slate -- it was impossible to change it! It was a huge disaster. God would eventually have to condemn these beings whom He loved very much to outer darkness forever. And the worst part was that their minds would continue to become more warped and perverted through all eternity. There would be no happiness and joy -- only self induced loneliness and frustration, and misery! It was a terrible tragedy.

The Bible doesn’t reveal how long God pondered this situation. After He cast Satan and his demons back to this world, which was covered by a worldwide ocean and clouds so think that the sun could not penetrate it, God looked at the fruits of what had just occurred, and they were not good.

It is possible that God planned to make humanity all along, and that this realization is what caused Satan, in a fit of jealous rage, to lose his mind and try to knock God off His throne. We will never know, although I suspect that this is the case.

We don’t know how long God looked down on the dark, storm tossed seas, just thinking about what had just happened. The demons were chained here in a type of their final punishment. That is probably why demons prefer or seem to prefer desert places to this day. They have had enough of “water world.”

In any case, at some point, God’s thinking and planing was done. He didn’t want this tragedy to ever repeat itself -- but how? If God’s main purpose was to REPRODUCE HIMSELF, then how could He do it, and yet still allow free moral agency without risking consigning His creations to eternal torture of their own creation if they made the wrong choice? Satan and his demons CANNOT REPENT, or change from their sins. So what was God to do?

God came up with a bold plan. He KNEW that the only class of being that could be ultimately relied upon NOT TO SIN was His own class, the God kind! But He could not risk just automatically creating other Beings at His level WHO HAD NOT YET FORMED CHARACTER. A Satan on the God plane of existence would be a UNIVERSE WRECKING TRAGEDY, which is probably why He created the angels as lesser beings in the first place. Yet, the sinning angels were now suffering an unspeakably horrible fate, with a continuing eternity of ever escalating mental torture. A loving God could not create more beings to suffer this fate.

So God had already created matter. Unlike spirit composed things, matter was fluid. One of its main properties was that IT WAS IN CONSTANT CHANGE! Things created of it were temporary, not permanent. This was good because if God made beings composed of THIS SUBSTANCE and they went wrong, He could then mercifully extinguish them as if they had not been. But, if they developed Godly character, and proved that they would go God’s way, He could then CHANGE THEM INTO SPIRIT BEINGS OF THE GOD KIND SAFELY and thus grant them an ETERNAL LIFE OF HAPPINESS AS HIS CHILDREN!

It was the most marvelous plan ever conceived. And so, on the seven days of creation, God started that Plan with the first man and the first woman in a newly remodeled earth, which God had reformed into beauty out of the chaos created when the sinning angels fell. You can read this whole thing in detail I Mr. Armstrong’s book mentioned above. It’s the greatest good news anyone could ever have.

How does this relate, then, to the situation of each and every one of us? Well, once we understand the reason for our human life, the choices become easier. We realize that we have a transcendent purpose and mission to our lives that makes each and every one of us a VERY IMPORTANT PERSON! Once we realize our potential, we can no longer feel worthless or alone. We know that our Father in Heaven loves us very much and WANTS US TO SUCCEED. But in order for us to attain our stupendous human potential, we sometimes have to erase the bad character marks in our lives through suffering until we give up the sins that are holding us back. Viewed in this perspective, we can understand that life is rich with meaning and purpose, and that each and every one of us is more important to God than we could ever realize. But, like any good parent, God has to sometimes spank and correct His children. And it’s not always easy.

it has been said often that “the Bible is hard on its heroes?” Why is this? it is so that we can LEARN FROM THE MISTAKES OF OTHERS, in the hope that we won’t fall into the same traps others did.

David was a “man after God’s own heart,” yet, there were times when he failed miserably, even years after his conversion. But he didn’t always see his sins either, just like us, despite the fact that they were sometimes big and obvious to everyone else. One of these situations brought from David the most beautiful Psalm of repentance in he whole Bible -- Psalm 51. I suggest that you read it when we are done today. it is good reading for us at any time of year, but especially as we get closer and closer to the Passover.

This Psalm was sparked by the incident of David’s sins surrounding his adultery with Bathsheba, and the murder of her husband to try and cover things up. These were terrible sins, but, amazingly, David did not see them that way for quite some time. It must be remembered that he had time to premeditate and plan his acts each step of the way after lust initially caused the adultery. It’s a prime example of how one sin can easily and quickly lead to another and then another, and before we know it, we have done truly terrible things. But God is Big Enough to forgive us for ANYTHING!

I would like you to pause now, and read II Sam.11-12:23.

I would like to highlight some things for you from your reading. Recall that this whole thing started because he saw a woman bathing on her roof. She was no doubt enjoying the sunshine and warmth, as hot water was hard to come by in those days. The sin started when David lusted after her.

He found out who she was, and that she was married to Uriah. This should have stopped the whole thing, but it didn’t. Like so many men, he just had to have this woman, so he sent his servants and had her brought to him. He was the king, after all, and his every wish was a command.

But remember that this must have taken some time. It may have been hours, or it could have even been a day or two. But I’m sure it at least took a couple of hours. So David had a roll in the hay with another man’s wife. That was a sin, but apparently David just forgot about the whole thing.

Sometime later though -- perhaps a couple of months even -- the woman realized she was pregnant. She sent this sad news to David, so he contrived a way out of this sticky situation for both of them. There is no sign yet of calling on God for His help or repenting of this sin. He was trying to solve this his way using his powers as king.

So David had Uriah called back from the front. He was sure that Uriah, like most men, could not resist going into his wife and having sex with her while he was home. After all, any man would do that. But David was surprised at how upright Uriah really was. He refused to go into his wife and satisfy himself while the other men at the front were in denial. What a man! I doubt that any of us could achieve this standard of justice!

David’s plot to extricate himself from this situation backfired, so, to avoid embarrassment of the situation, he decided to have Uriah killed. That way he could take Bathsheba as a wife and legitimize the child. I imagine David realized since Uriah died as “an act of war,” that he had not committed murder. But God did not see it that way.

It really is amazing when you think about it. David had a man killed to cover up his own sin. He then took the widow as his own wife after the proper mourning period had passed! It sounds so cold blooded -- and it was.

David apparently thought little about this even after the child was born. But God was very upset, so He sent Nathan the Prophet with a parable. As you read, the parable concerned a poor man who had only one sheep, which he loved and treated as a member of his family. The rich neighbor didn’t want to give any of his sheep to a visitor [which was customary at the time] to make a feast for him to welcome him to his home. So, he took the poor man’s sheep and gave it to him. David was outraged, and said that this man should restore fourfold what he had taken, and then be killed. It was then that Nathan revealed that David was the rich man. At this point, a veil was lifted from David’s mind, and he saw the enormity of his sin. He was also told that the child would die as a consequence of this sin.

This is the incident that sparked the heartfelt 51st Psalm. Read it now if you haven’t already. This also gives us an insight into WHY David was a “man after God’s own heart.” it wasn’t because David was perfect in all his ways -- he was far from that. David was loved by God because when his sins were finally revealed, he had the right reaction and repented! Yes, he made the course corrections necessary in his life when God revealed his sins to him, and then vowed to move, with God’s help, in the other direction. That’s all God ever asks of us and ever will ask.

So what is your big sin? What have you done that you don’t think God can forgive you of? I’ll just bet it isn’t anywhere near as bad as what David did. This is a story of encouragement to all of us. God is ready to forgive us once we repent. When He brings our sins to our attention, what is our reaction? Do we deny it? Do we get hostile at the messenger [David could have easily had Nathan killed for his “insolence” by daring to accuse the king of something of this nature]? Or do we look inside ourselves, see that the charge is right. We have sinned. Then, do we repent before God, and ask His help to overcome this sin?

Once we ask God for help in overcoming sin, He is only too happy to reach down, pick us up, and lend us the helping hand we need to get out of the ditch we are in. that’s all He ever wants. He wants us to admit our sins and ask for His help, which He will freely give.

Now the sin might be an ingrained habit that we are struggling to overcome. God does not necessarily deliver us completely form our trail right away. But He will eventually free us from our sin, and set our feet once more on the path to eternal life, because that is what life is all about.

Remember how Christ said to “suffer the little children to come unto me, for of such belongs the Kingdom of Heaven.” He could have pointed out anyone in the crowd, but He gathered up a little child in His arms and said that we were to become like that in order to enter His Kingdom.

What are little children like? Little children are teachable. they might do wrong, but when we punish them and show them the right way, they will generally follow it without too much resistance. A little child is devoid of prejudice. They treat all people equally -- that is, until they see examples of wrong behavior. Children love to lean at their parent’s knees, and have bed time stories read to them before they are tucked in. They have no guile, deceit, or strutting vanity. They are tender and loving. They are what they appear to be, because they can’t be anything but themselves.

We need to remember these lessons and inculcate them into our lives. So many people have been turned off and damaged by past betrayals from those who have claimed to be God’s servants, but have proven by their fruits that they are not. God is calling us back to our first love at conversion. When we were as little children staring in wide eyed amazement at the precious truths of God revealed by His Church and His Apostle. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He has promised to never leave us nor forsake us.

Mr. Armstrong said so often in the final years of his life “we are in the time of final exams! This is serious business! Your very salvation may be at stake!” many think today that these are only cute slogans used to manipulate them. They see some kind of sinister conspiracy by Mr. Armstrong and others to defraud them of happiness and joy in life. They see the past as a terrible nightmare to be forgotten, and they are bitter, thinking the Church and God “took the best years of my life, and flushed them down the toilet.”

Well, which one of the Ten Commandments is bad for us to keep? Which one of the health laws concerning clean and unclean meats is written for our harm? Which one of God’s ways are so terrible for us? Which one of Satan’s ways lead to life and happiness in the end? God asks you these things today.

Yes, there were terrible sins in the top leadership of God’s Church in the past. Mr. Armstrong did some terrible things. Mr. Armstrong even LIED sometimes. So what’s the big deal? Did he commit murder to cover up adultery? did he engage in any of the other sins of Biblical heroes? Did he murder hundreds of Christians lie the Apostle Paul before his conversion? The fact that he sinned meant that he was human, just like we all are. The same can be said about every other biblical hero. If you want to talk about incest, maybe you should go and confront Noah and Lot on the subject! What other sin do you want to accuse someone of? Well, it’s been done by God’s saints in the Bible -- every last one you can imagine! And yet they repented, were forgiven, and that closes the subject.

Little children are not petty and unforgiving. Grownups are. We need to repent of past mistakes, and then forget them. We also need to give people the benefit of the doubt.

I have called many of God’s present day minister hirelings and hypocrites. Why did I do this? Did I do it to discredit them? Did I do this to gain a following for myself? No. I did it because God inspired me to give His ministry a stern warning. Because the situation is so serious, He called me to DRASTIC ACTION. He called me to be SHOCKING, because many of us who are asleep can only be woken up WITH A JOLT, to quote Mr. Armstrong!

So the reason I said these things is because God is calling his ministry and people to a heartfelt, deep, real repentance! God is sick and tired of the petty bickering, vanity, ego, and plays for power! He WILL NOT TOLERATE IT MUCH LONGER!

What will it take for God’s people and ministers to wake up to their sins and repent. Look at the fruit and you can see NOTHING ELSE BUT SIN! Sin brings death. Sin brings strife. Sin brings division. Sin causes men to have ego problems, and many times that ego is the only thing that separates brethren. WHAT A SHAME AND A SLAP IN THE FACE THIS IS TO OUR SAVIOR!

God DEMANDS that we all look at the FRUIT of our collective sins! How much longer must we suffer? the college is gone. The property built up over 50 YEARS of preaching the Gospel is being abused and wasted by Satan’s servants and used to OPPOSE THE TRUTH OF GOD.

So now God’s people are all in their little lifeboats. The Titanic is taking on water. It’s been hit by the ICEBERG OF SATAN. So many of us thought the USS WCG was unsinkable! In our smug self conceit we thought we had it all made. And on center stage for our entertainment was a 93 year old man who was just so wonderful to hear! it was like coming to see a rock star, or some film star. It was like seeing our IDOL! The message didn’t matter. It was just so great to sit there and drink it all in. People got excited about seeing and hearing Mr. Armstrong more than they got excited about the MESSAGE!

God and Mr. Armstrong knew this, which is why he so often repeated himself. I remember one tense moment when he said, “many of you out there say, ‘Oh, there goes Mr. Armstrong saying the same thing over and over again.’ Well, if you people had understood this message the first time, then there would be no need to repeat it. But you JUST AREN’T GETTING THIS! So I will continue to repeat things until you do! You better believe I will!”

Brethren and ministers, let’s become like children again. Let’s understand where God is leading today. Let’s understand that God is poised to restore HIS GOVERNMENT TO HIS CHURCH! All He wants is for us to become teachable and childlike again. All He wants is for us to quite fighting over our toys and get on with the serious business at hand. His Spirit is a spirit of unity, love, and forgiveness. He stands ready to forgive, and to help us out of the pit we have dug for ourselves.

I implore those of you in the ministry especially to understand why God has inspired me to chastise you. It isn’t out of malice or hatred, but out of love and concern for your salvation. Maybe you have been a hireling and a hypocrite for some time now. You live from paycheck to paycheck, while you watch the little lifeboat you are in take on water. You can see the day when the gravy train will be derailed for good -- and then what will you do?

The normal human reaction is to panic and to lash out and to try and steal sheep form someone else’s lifeboat as people leave yours. You feel you have to project an image of being perfect or people won’t follow you, but you know you’re not perfect, so that fuels your inner fears. You feel there is no escape from this sinking boat. You see your life crumbling and yourself and your family in the street.

So what is the answer? God’s Spirit is not a spirit of fear, but of a sound mind. Do you still believe in God, or have you lost that, too? I don’t believe that deep down inside you have rejected God, but you have suppressed the simplicity of the faith with human reasoning and logic. You also know that this doesn’t work in the Work of God. God’s Work is not like General Motors, or IBM, or Xerox. The methods that work with worldly businesses and worldly churches just won’t work with God’s Work. His Work is different. It’s not a Work that concentrates on MONEY and its management, but it is a Work that should concentrate on FAITH AND PREACHING THE GOSPEL, knowing that the Living Jesus Christ will, as always before when we have trusted din Him, provided the means to get the job done.

I know many of you are having a problem accepting the supernatural miracle that God has raised up a new Apostle to lead His Church, but it is true! The heartfelt prayers of thousands have finally been answered, but since it has not been done the way WE WOULD HAVE DONE IT, or because WE DIDN’T VOTE ON IT, many reject it. Some are laughing me to scorn at this very minute, just like so many used to laugh at and make fun of Mr. Armstrong even when he was alive! But what has been the fruit of YOUR LABORS as compared to his when he was following God? Hasn’t Mr. Armstrong’s prediction of disaster for a church off the track been proven by twelve hard years of experience? So how can you continue to laugh, unless you are a fool?

The unity and joy of God’s Holy Spirit can bring joy to His church once again. He is calling all to repentance. Don’t worry about what position you will have. Don’t worry about whether God will continue to use you, and then also see after your physical needs. I know many of you didn’t like it when God used Mr. Armstrong to correct you over the years, but it was all for your own good. Many of you thought you were “free” after his death. The “tyrant” was gone. So what has been the result? The accomplishment without God’s leadership? dare we say less than zero? Dare we use the word the most astonishing ‘negative growth’ this world has ever seen? And now the SS United has started down the slippery slope that the WCG has been on? When will we learn?

Many of you are in very bad attitudes and won’t listen to correction until you have been punished much more. So be it. But I am calling God’s servants who ARE willing to repent to turn again to God and let Him guide His Work as in the past! Let’s put first our own lives back on God’s track, and then set out to do the same thing in God’s Church. Let’s rally around the leadership that God sees fit to place in His church, STARTING WITH HIS NEW END TIME APOSTLE, and stop petty bickering and infighting and get on with this Work. As God said to Saul just after he was struck down with blindness on the road to Damascus: “How long will you continue to kick against the pricks?”
